There are so many things you buy for a baby knowing you’ll eventually give them away.
The clothes they somehow grow out of after wearing twice 😂
The toys.
The bassinet.
Boxes and boxes of baby things that slowly get passed on as they grow.
But then there are the things you just can’t give away.
Their hospital bracelet.
Their first ultrasound photos.
Their announcement disc.
And that one baby blanket that somehow became their blanket.
The one that’s in all their photos.
The one you wrapped them in when they were tiny.
The one you eventually fold up and put somewhere safe because there’s no way you’re giving that one away.
I think that’s what makes choosing your baby’s first blanket so special.
You’re choosing it before they understand what it means.
When they’re newborns, they don’t know why you chose that particular blanket.
They don’t understand the patterns.
They don’t know why seeing them wrapped in something connected to their culture means so much to you.
But one day they will.
One day they’ll look back at their baby announcement photo.
They’ll see the framed pictures around the house or scroll back through Mum and Dad’s socials.
They might find their announcement disc and baby blanket tucked away in a keepsake box.
And they’ll see that their culture was there from the very beginning.
Because you chose to put it there.
You made that part of their story before they were even old enough to understand it.
There’s something really special about that, especially when you’re finding your own way with culture too.
Most of our babies are growing up in the diaspora.
Maybe they’re full Pasifika, half, or growing up with more than one culture to call their own.
Maybe you didn’t grow up knowing as much about your own culture as you wish you did.
Maybe you’re still learning yourself.
And sometimes that can make us overthink how we’re going to pass culture on.
You want them to feel connected. You want them to be proud of where they come from.
But when you’re still figuring parts of it out yourself, it can be hard to know where to begin.
You don’t have to have it all figured out to start.
Sometimes choosing your baby’s first Polynesian blanket is simply one small way of bringing their culture into their world from the beginning.
And when you’re gifting one, there’s meaning behind your choice too.
Maybe it’s for your niece or nephew.
Your grandchild.
Your best friend’s new baby.
Or a little pepe in your family who is growing up away from home.
There’s something special about choosing a gift that represents a part of who they are, especially when you know their parents are trying to keep that connection strong too.
You’re not just thinking about what would be cute for the baby.
You’re thinking about them. Their family. Their culture. Their story.
And people can feel the difference when a gift has been chosen like that.
We’ve had so many families use their Polybubs blankets and announcement discs for those first photos and milestone moments.
Every time we see one, it feels like a quiet little reminder that these pieces become part of a family’s story long after the newborn stage ends.
That’s what we hope for every blanket that leaves here.
